Common Concerns about Adoption
Making an adoption plan can one of the most difficult decisions you will make in your life. The reasons people choose adoption for their children vary, but it is always based on the circumstances of their situation; not on the lack of love for their child. The birthparent workers at ABC are here to assist you in deciding what plan will be the best for your child, yourself and the children you may be currently parenting. Here are some of the issues that could impact your decision:
Support
- Family and friends that have offered you support in parenting and the reality of them assisting you.
- The opinions of others regarding adoption and the importance of those opinions on your decision.
- The importance of family support and the impact your decision will have on others.
- The involvement of the birth father in the planning process, including knowledge of his rights.
Finances
- Your financial stability and how it would change if you parented this child.
- Knowledge of state assistance like Medicaid and WIC and if you are eligible for these programs.
- If you are working or going to school, who would care for the child during that time. Are there childcare facilities in your area, what are the costs, do they accept newborns.
Your Well-being
- What your daily activities are now. How they would change if you decided to parent.
- Your physical and emotional strength to parent this child.
- Your long-term goals for you and the children you may be parenting. Your ability to accomplish them if you parent this child.
- What your future will be like if you choose adoption as compared to other choices.
