FAQs About Adoption from China
1. May you specify a gender preference?
No. You may, however, state that you would prefer a girl or are open to either gender. The vast majority of Chinese children available for adoption are girls. Because of this it is very likely you will be referred a girl.
2. How old are the children?
Chinese children are available for adoption from 6 months to 14 years of age. The majority are around 1 year of age or older at arrival home. Generally, couples aged 30-45 receive infant referrals, 45-50 year olds received toddler referrals and 50-55 year olds receive a referral for a school-aged child.
3. What are the requirements for adoptive couples applying to the China program?
You must be married to apply to the China program. Both individuals must be between the ages of 30-50. Prior divorce is acceptable. Couples must have been married a minimum of 2 years. If one or both spouses were previously married, couple must have been married a minimum of 5 years. If you have more than two children currently in the home, prescreening and approval from Spence-Chapin and the CCAA will be required before continuing in the process. Both parents must have a high school dipolma and a BMI (Body Mass Index of 40 or less).
4. May you adopt more than one child at a time?
Except in the extremely rare case of twins, you may only adopt one child at a time. China requires a one year timeframe (in order to complete post-placement supervision) before you may submit a second dossier to China for another adoption.
5. Who will you travel with?
You will be part of a group of other Spence-Chapin families traveling to China to adopt. While in China, you will travel with your group as well as Spence-Chapin's in-country staff who will guide and assist you through each step of the process.
